What Does The Thyroid Ultrasound Report Indicate?

Hello, my dr. recently sent me for a thyroid ultrasound. and TSH blood test. The TSH came back as 1.53, and the ultra sound came back as multiple nodules are noted bilaterally, notdule# 1 is dominant, greater than 1.5CM. recommendation is: fine needle aspiration of right isthmus nodule #1. indication is: enlarged thyroid, dysphagia. only trouble i have had is a feeling like there is alump in my throat. sometimes trouble swallowing, but no other issues. chew smaller bites. feel fine otherwise. the sizes are: right, 4.2x1.7x1.4cm, left lobe 3.8x1.5x1.4 cm, isthmus .3 cm. comment is: the overall echotexture of the glad is mildly hetergeneous. nodule assessment is: right isthmus: 1.8x1.6x1.0 cm, newly defined, complex, well defined margins, no calcification. nodule #2, right isthmus (low) .9x.9x.7 cm, newly defined, complex. Nodule #3, left lob, upper and mid poles, 1.1x1.0x.7cm, newly defined, solid, well-defined margins, calcification present. making appt for me with endocronoligist for the fine needle aspiration of right isthmus nodule #1, but just wondering if it sounds like I have anything to worry about. thanks for your help.

Hello,

Your ultrasound report suggests that you have multinodular goiter. Your thyroid hormone levels are normal. Fine needle aspiration and microscopic examination is required to rule out any malignant( cancerous) changes in the nodules.

The treatment of choice for multinodular goiter is removal of the thyroid gland and supplementing thyroid hormones as tablet throughout life. This is common complaint seen in people living in hilly areas and those who have a low iodine intake in their diet. Thyroid gland removal is the best option as multinodular goiter in the long run can develop cancerous changes.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Meera Rajeev, Anesthesiologist
