What Does The Following Heart CT Scan Result Indicate?

I went for a CT heart scan. Halfway through they stopped the test before the liquid was put in my arm. The Technician said they found out what they needed to know. The problem was a calcium deposit in the left artrial decending up high. I am 76 yrs old and female in good health and very active. What is my next step? A fax was sent to my family doctor and also to my Internist/geriatric doctor. Should I wait until they call me?

Hi,

CT heart scan are usually done to see the blood supply of the heart. There are three major blood vessels supplying the heart. With the age they calcify or block and the blood flow to the cardiac tissue reduces. So, it presents with a lot of symptoms like chest pain etc. or sometimes there are no symptoms. So, when there are no symptoms, they may present in the ECG as some abnormality.

The liquid the technician wanted to inject is called as a contrast medium and is required to see the block which may occur due to fat deposition. But, if calcification is the reason, contrast is not required. So, the technician might have detected some abnormality in form of calcification of the vessels which may be correlating to the findings of the ECG and therefore, no contrast was given.

As the process of the report of CT scan will be processed, you might get a call from a cardiologist or a geriatric doctor for the further management of the problem. Still, don't worry. There are many suitable medications and interventions which may help you out.
