What Does Swelling On The Wrist Indicate?

Hi, My husband hand and wrist is swollen. This has been going on for the past 10 years off and on. It only lasts maybe a week or so. We just thought he has Arthritis..... Anyway last night for no reason this has happenend, no injury. he has been putting Ice on his hand. Our question is until he gets to the Dr. will a heating pad help at this point? Please advie Thank you

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It may be best to use the ice/cold compresses for now instead of the warmth.

Cold compresses cause constriction of blood vessels whereas a warm compress would cause dilation. Dilation can potentially, in some cases, lead to more swelling.

He can also consider using an anti inflammatory medication if he can use one of these eg naproxen or ibuprofen
