What Does Soreness In The Neck Indicate?

My neck has become increasingly sore on one side during the past week to 10 days. It starts at the ear and continues to the jaw and neck. It feels like I have the mumps (though I never had them). I do have a cracked molar on the other side of my jaw that has a slight infection and must be removed. Do you think the two are related and should I see a doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Acute ear infection can lead referred pain, so you can have referred pain in the jaw. Second parotid gland inflammation also can lead to such a problem. Tooth infection also can lead referred pain. If all these causes are not present, then trepezitis like muscle inflammation might be the reason. Until you see a doctor, Brufen like nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drug can be prescribed Consult otorhinolaryngologist for examination, and get a prescription.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
