What Does Sharp Pain In The Upper Back And Neck Indicate?

I have mild aching with occasional sharp shooting pain in my upper back and neck. After having surgery for spinal stenosis, I experienced some hypertrophy in my back muscles. I ve had an electromylogram which revealed 17 places that were spasming. I also had a facelift, and following that surgery, some muscles behind my ears and one in my eyebrow area sometimes swell up. They don t know if I have fibromyalgia or some form of dystonia (segmental). What do you think? Also, when I lift anything heavy, I am in a great deal of pain the following day.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

By your history and description, possibility of muscular spasm related pain is more likely. So follow these steps for better symptomatic relief.

1. Avoid heavyweight lifting and strenuous exercise.
2. Avoid sudden jerky movements of back. Avoid movements causing pain. 3. Apply warm water pad on affected areas of back.
4. Take painkiller and muscle relaxant drugs like Ibuprofen and thiocolchicoside whenever needed.
5. Take calcium and vitamin D 3 supplements because deficiency of them can also cause muscle spasm.

Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
