What Does Severe Swelling On The Ankles Indicate?
I experienced extreme swelling of the ankles about a year ago after taking a sulfa drug prescribed by my ENT doctor. After taking the RX for 2-3 days, I stopped taking it. The swelling went down, but not entirely to the point my ankles were before. Since then, I have continued to experience swelling of ankles, although not to the same degree as when taking the drug.

Swelling of both ankles can have different causes. Some of the most common causes are-
(1) side effect of medication, e.g. the blood pressure medication Amlodipine
(2) venous disease
(3) conditions affecting the heart, kidneys, liver
(4) trauma, arthritis
