What Does Severe Pressure In The Chest On The Left Side Indicate?

Hello. I have suffered from GERD for the past few years and had an endoscopy last year that showed quite a bit of inflammation. For the past few days I have had constant gurgling in my esophagus and am now coughing up clear, foamy phlegm. In the last hour or so I have started to get rather strong pressure in my upper left breast and chest area which worsens when I push on it. Is this something to be concerned with beyond my history of GERD? Or could it just be a bad flare up? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Because of your long history with GERD, the symptoms you describe might be due to another flare up but it would be mostly expected to be in the center of the chest more than in the left side. To be safe it would be recommended to see your doctor and have proper examination to rule out the heart as the cause of the symptoms.

If it gets worse with pressure (when you push on it) it might be due to the chest wall as well (muscles) but as explained please see your doctor to rule out heart problems first.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
