Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I found out in the summer that I need a root canal and a couple crowns and in the last few I have noticed more pain and have experienced shooting pains on the side of my face where I will need the root canal. My spouse and I were having sex and right in the middle I got massive shooting pains and the same thing happened again last night. Most of the pain is on the top left side of my head.
If you need a root canal in a tooth then it can be most probably due to deep decay in the tooth leading to nerve exposure..
It can cause severe shooting pain that an even radiate to ear, temple, head and ear..
But many a times bouts of severe pain that lasts for a small duration can be due to Nerve related problem known as Trigeminal Neuralgia..
So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated so that the exact cause can be ruled out.
In case if after root canal treatment also the pain episodes does not get better then you can consult a Neurophysician and get a CT Scan done to rule out if it is nerve related pain.. In that case neurotic painkillers like Gabapantin, Carbamazipine etc can be advised..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
