What Does Severe Pain In The Throat Indicate?

I woke up with horrible pain in my throat and going down to the stomach It is pain not burning I seem to have this pain when I burp or breathe in deeply I thought it might be heart related (I am 71) I ran to the dr. He took an EKG and listened to my breating EKG was perfect and lungs were clear. He prescribed Prilosec for 30 days Any ideas?
