What Does Severe Pain In The Left Foot Indicate?

Hi, my name is Samantha. On October 9, 2016, I woke up, sat up in bed and as soon as I stepped onto the floor and stood up I felt this crunching feeling and sharp stabbing pain in the top of my left foot. My husband took me to the emergency room where they did x-rays and told me that I had re-fractured a bone in the top of my foot. (But I had never broken a bone in my foot before.) They wrapped my foot in an ace bandage, gave me crutches, some ibuprofen for pain and sent me home....and told me to see my primary care physician as soon as I could. I couldn t get in to see my doctor because she was on maternity leave so they sent me to see another primary care physician. After approximately 11 weeks of being on medical leave from my job and being given a pneumatic walking boot, I attempted to go back....but this only lasted until December sometime. I absolutely could not take the pain of trying to be on my feet for 8 hours. I ended up going to see an orthopedic doctor starting January 17, 2017 and back on medical leave from work again. Well it is now August 30, 2017 and I am still on medical leave and still in pain. The top of my foot aches, my ankle is constantly in pain, I feel like I constantly have a burning/warm sensation in my foot (mostly in my toes....ALL of my toes!), I constantly feel like I need to bend and/or scrunch my toes up to get some relief from the feeling for just a moment, it hurts to walk on my foot. From the beginning I have had x-rays, MRIs, I have seen a neurologist, I ve had a bone density test done (which I was told I have the bones of a 70 year old woman), and a three step bone scan done. I have been told everything from re-fracturing a bone in the beginning...foot sprain, ankle sprain, stress fractures and stress reactors in my foot, osteopenia, RSD and now as of my last appointment (yesterday) ...arthritis. I am 43 years old. Last summer before all of this happened....I used to work my 8-9 hour shift at work (CONSTANTLY on my feet) then I would get done work and change my clothes and go for a 5 mile walk....and every week or so (after working and taking my walk) I would come home and push mow our 1 acre yard. Bones of a 70 year old woman? RSD? Arthritis? What is going on with me? Please help!! :(

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms could be due to-digestion

- Severe osteoporosis (Vit D & calcium deficiency) or parathyroid gland problem causing the multiple symptoms
-Associated spinal or disc problem/or local nerve compression due to local boney deformity (due to previously unknown fracture because parathyroid problem) can lead to the nerve (supplying foot) pinching causing the burning sensation in foot & also the pain.

To spot the diagnosis you need investigations like parathyroid hormone estimation, MRI of the foot/lumbar spine as per need.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
