What Does Severe Pain In The Joint Of The Big Toe Indicate?

I have extreme pain on the joint of my big toe on my left foot. I woke up last Thursday, only to find that I was walking with a limp ever since then. My big toe isn t pointing inward toward my second toe, so I don t think it s a bunion. It s only on my left foot (not my right foot). I already made an appointment with my primary care doctor; it s this Friday.
