What Does Severe Pain In The Buttocks Indicate?

I am 77 years old, and diabetic.. Though I have always been a gym rat, over the past ten years my buttocks and legs have suffered increasing pain. It feels like the burn you feel from intense exercise. If I stretch carefully before working out, everything feels close to normal , but a half hour later the same pain comes back. What would cause this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

From the description you have given it seems like a condition called sciatica. Which is characterised by sharp pain in the buttock and upper thigh. You can take analgesics like Gabapentin which is very effective in this condition. If the pain persist, consult an orthopedician and get yourself evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
