What Does Right-sided Heart Failure Mean?

Hello. I have a question. My Cardiologist and family doctor both have told me I have Right side heart failure unspecified.. I asked my one doctor what the unspecified means and I was told it means that they are unsure of what is causing my heart failure. I went to my local ER when I was sick and asked them and they told me something totally different that it means that its a temporary health issue.. I am confused on what it really means. Could you help me please to know. I have lived with this heart failure for over 5 years. So I Dont get what unspecified means

Hello,

Right-sided heart failure means that the right side of your heart is not able to pump blood as efficiently as it normally would. There is two sides of your heart: the left side, which pumps blood to your body, and the right side, that pumps blood to your lungs.

The most common cause of right-sided heart failure is left-sided heart failure, which causes blood to back up into the lungs, and then into the right side of the heart, causing failure. Another cause is due to lung disease, which causes the right heart to have to pump against increased pressure, which over time causes failure. So this is not a temporary health issue, and the unspecified means they have not clearly determined what the cause of the right heart failure is.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
