What Does Peeling And Discharge From Navel Of A Child Suggest?

my son is two weeks old today, we went to the doctor and they put silver nitrate in his belly button. it is only a few hours later and his belly button looks to be peeling and oozing some sort of clear liquid. some skin around the belly button looks as though it may be peeling? is this a normal? what are usual side effects of silver nitrate? should i take him back to the doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Some peeling and oozing is not unusual during normal healing of the tissue. However, if the child is feverish and/or crying in agony when the area around the belly button is touched; you must consider consulting the treating doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
