What Does Pain In The Balls Of The Feet Indicate?

I am having foot pain, mainly in the area under the ball of my foot. I noticed it Tuesday while grocery shopping. Figured it was my sock and maybe it was bunched up. Didn t really notice it on Wednesday. On Thursday I was aware of some pain. By yesterday morning the foot was swollen. It hurts on and off but I couldn t sleep last night due to the pain. I took some meds and finally got to sleep. It is still swollen today. I am staying off of it. I used cold briefly and wrapped it but it doesn t seem to help. I am at a loss as to what to do. Do I need to see someone?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your history of acute onset of pain and swelling of the fore foot area denotes an inflammation. If you are a Diabetic, this type of infection can occur commonly, due to minor trauma. Most important is not to bear weight, which is to offload the foot till complete resolution of infection.

Please keep the foot raised on another chair, while being seated, to reduce the swelling. You also need to take a course of antibiotics. Please consult a Podiatric surgeon or a General surgeon, who can examine your foot and prescribe the appropriate antibiotic.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Regards,
Dr. Ajit Kumar Varma
