What Does Pain Around The Armpit And Chest Bone Indicate?

I am having pain in my upper front, left side, by my armpit, on my chestbone . The pain is constant but it gets worse when I cough or sneeze, like a stabbing pain. I ve had this pain for 3 days now. The pain started 2 days after I slipped and fell flat on the floor with my stomach hitting the ground. Fortunately, the floor was carpeted. May I know what is causing this pain? Please advise. Thank you very much....Sonny Reyes, YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Incomplete data like age, gender, any associated medical illness. Suggestive of costochondritis or a fractured rib. Based on the history given you seem to be suffering from costochondritis. It is an inflammatory condition of the cartilage at the point where the upper ribs attach to the breastbone (sternum) apparently resulted from the injury following the fall on the floor.

I advise you to consult a doctor for proper clinical examination and to carry out certain tests such as chest x-ray and ECG to confirm the diagnosis. Meanwhile
1. Apply Ice and or heat packs to the affected area.
2. Take rest and avoiding activities that worsen the pain.
3. Take over the counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen or diclofenac for the relief of pain and swelling if any.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
