What Does My Urine Analysis Report Indicate?

I recently had my yearly check up with my primary doctor. The blood work that he ordered came back with a problem with the protein in my urine. Because of this my doctor ordered a 24hr urine analysis with also came back elevated at 1229. What does this mean? Can you give me an answer? I have an appt. to see a a nephrologist on Monday.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
It is suggestive of kidney disease.

The 24-hour urine protein test checks the function of the kidneys and helps detect disease. It is usually advised if you have symptoms of kidney diseases like glomerulonephritis or nephrotic syndrome.

It is also done routinely in patients suffering from uncontrolled diabetes, high BP, systemic lupus erythematosus to rule out their complications like nephropathy, etc.

A normal test result shows less than 150 milligrams of protein per day.
A value of 1229 is high and this seems to be a sign of kidney damage and disease.

Kindly consult your nephrologist for further evaluation like doing certain lab tests like CBC, kidney & liver function tests, serum lipid profile, blood glucose, and abdominal ultrasound scan to detect the severity of the kidney disease.

Wishing you best of your health.
A feedback is appreciated.
