What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

My son, Ryan is a 15 yr old lacrosse and football player who was diagnosed 7 weeks ago (4/18) with a nonosseous fibroma and a stress fracture along the medial cortex of the distal femoral shaft of the left knee measuring about 4.1 cm. Ryan had a repeat MRI of the left knee on Friday, 6/5. Ryan had lax practice Thursday night, 6/4 where he scrimmaged and did a great deal of running. The MRI showed fluid in the joint and re demonstration of a nonossifying fibroma measuring 1.3x0.7x3.4 cm. also redemonstration of significant bone marrow edema thruout the surrounding femoral shaft with associated periostitis and a new linear T1/T2 hypointense band radiating from the upper margin of the lesion and coursing along the posterior diaphysis of the distal femur all compatible with an incomplete stress fracture which also extends thru the NOF. His clinical presentation is no pain . Does he need to sit longer, what is the typical recovery.........seeing a Ortho Oncologist tomorrow - who else? Thank you

Hello,

The MRI results unfortunately there is a problem with his bones. First, I strongly recommend him to get a rest from the sport at least until recovery time needed. Second, the orthopedic specialist will explain to you if he needs surgery or medication treatment. Just wait for the appointment and just try to follow the suggestions.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Jolanda Nikolla, Pulmonologist
