Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
hello i just had a vaginal and pelvic ultrasound because i have right side pain. And was told I have a ovarian cyst measuring 6.6 cm ,in August I had an in office ultrasound and cyst measure 2cm. the results reads minimal fluid seen in right adnexa and right ovarian mass . what does minimal fluid means?
Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. I have read your description and understand your concern. Adnexa are the tissue structures most closely related structurally and functionally to the uterus. Minimum fluid in Pouch of Douglas (POD) or adnexa means that it is normal. This area normally contains 1 to 3 ml (minimum) of fluid throughout the menstrual cycle. Fluid increases to about 4 to 5 ml during ovulation. Increased fluid seen in this space can be due to blood, pus or other fluids. The causes could vary from: ovulation, irritable bowel syndrome, ectopic pregnancy, rupture of ovarian cysts and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). In case the collection of fluid is more than normal, the cause for it needs to be ascertained by means of clinical examination and other investigations. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
