What Does Fluctuating Blood Pressure Suggest?

Normally I have a blood pressure reading of 120/70. I a aged 78. But for the last 12/18 months I ve been looking after my husband aged 85 who had a bleed in the brain and fractured scull, the pressures are greater at sometimes than others and in our doctors surgery I took my own blood pressure on a new machine installed in the waiting area. I m not on any medication and hope to stay that way.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dr. Hanif warmly welcomes you with thanks for a consult!

I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns according to the latest medical guidelines.

Sometimes the individual checking the blood pressure gets the different reading. Everybody is trained differently and so gets different reading that can also be a mistake. Machines also give different reading. Even same machine may give a little fluctuation.

Stress, and emotional lability, white coat fear, environment of the hospital and some loved one in pain/disease are the other factors contributing to varied readings and usually cause a higher than usual reading.

We have to keep in view the complete scenario to see if there is a genuine cause of rise of BP or it is just a fluctuation that can be referred to as the fluke reading or just an artifact.

Your physician may help you better by taking serial blood pressure readings by himself on successive visits.
