Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Early Diastolic Notch During Pregnancy Mean?
I am 22 weeks pregnant.I am 35 years old. In the recent ultrasound (doppler study), both the arteries showed early diastolic notch. When consulted, the doctor told me not to worry but it makes me worried whether it is some defect in the fetus. Please explain what is early diastolic notch? How can this be improved and what precautions do I need?
It is indicative of pattern of blood flow in the blood vessels that carry blood to the uterus. It is a screening test that helps doctors to identify patients that need extra attention in pregnancy and child-birth. Bilateral uterine notching is an important risk factor for high blood pressure and early onset pre-eclampsia. Persistence of this notch after 24 weeks of pregnancy can predispose the pregnancy to high blood pressure and its complications like pre-eclampsia. To prevent these complications you should have regular ante-natal check up, some additional tests and certain medications to be prescribed by your doctor to ensure a healthy outcome for you and your baby.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
