What Does Diagnosis Of Salmonella In Blood Suggest?

My sister is in hospital with multifocal Langerhans cell histiocytosis. She has it in her skin, liver, and pituatary as well as lesions on her shin bones. She finished a 5 day infusion of chemo ( cloforabine). Now she has an infection - blood cultures showed salmonella in the blood!!! What is happening here? How did she get salmonella in her blood?? While in the hospital?

Thank you for using our service. Salmonella a is a bacteria that can enter the blood and create a severe infection. This can happen in patience with immune problems, like your sister, that is on chemotherapy for her cancer. It is very important that the patient is treated with intravenous antibiotic because this bacteria is very aggressive and can create a lot of complications. Salmonella is a bacteria that most of the time is found in the intestinal area, but can also be obtained from contaminated foods. I hope my advice has been helpful. -Dr.JC
