What Does Chest Pain In A Teenager Indicate?

My son is 14, he has been having chest pains and out of curiosity I took his blood pressure which was 134/54. When the pains stop the bottom number rises to normal as does the top when it is high but mostly it s just the bottom number being in the 50s when he s hurting and the instant the pain goes away the number goes back up. Can you explain what s going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I am of the opinion that
1. Blood pressure needs to be measured on 3 accounts after 15 minutes of rest each time before coming to a conclusion.

2. From the complaints that you have stated it is very much essential to consult an internal medicine consultant who can guide you regarding investigations like ECG and echocardiography to rule out any congenital problems of the heart since he is just 14 years old.

3. The pain that he is experiencing should be investigated if it is due to the muscular origin or due to inflammation of cartilage or due to cardiac ailment first.

When a child is under stress due to pain the systolic BP (numerator) may seem a little higher due to increased heart rate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Riyanka Chail, General & Family Physician
