What Does Bright Red Spots On The Legs And Arms Indicate?

I have a few pinpoint flat, bright red dots on my legs and arms. I ve had one on my calf for a few years that is a tiny bit bigger now. I notice a new one about every year. They are flat, non-fluid filled, and do not itch or hurt. The one on my calf that is getting bigger is slightly raised. They also do not go away or change color. What type of doctor should I see...a dermatologist? What could this possibly be caused from?

Hello,

You are having red spots on the legs and arms. These spots do not itch, are non-fluid filled and are slightly raised. Your symptoms are indicative of Keratosis pilaris. It commonly occurs when the pores are clogged with the protein, keratin. It is triggered when the skin is dry. Take care of your hygiene. Take bath everyday. Avoid wearing synthetic clothes, wear loose fitting cotton clothes.

You should apply ointments or creams that loosen and remove the dead cells; creams like salicylic acid, urea, alpha-hydroxy such as lactic acid. After bath keep your skin well hydrated and moist. You can consult a dermatologist to detect any other medical condition that may be causing you symptoms. You will be accordingly treated.

Keratosis pilaris can be treated with laser therapy. However, you will be required to go through various skin tests, blood tests, to rule out sexually transmitted diseases. If positive you will be treated with antibiotics and antivirals. Stay away from addictions if any. Avoid taking any food or medicine that triggers your symptoms. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
