What Does Blood Calcium Level Of 10.9 Suggest?

Hi. Am 70 years old. My blood calcium is 10.9 - 11.4 for many years. PTH is slightly over 100. For years my doctor said not to worry, because my 24 hours urine test didn t show any calcium. and bone density is OK. I have RA. Am on Endrel and pain killers. I do have fatigue and overall feel bad. My last test showed calcium 11.9 and PTH 108. Now my doctor sending me for a nuclear test for a parathyroid condition. Your opinion? thanks, Rachel

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Sir, Hi & Welcome.
Both the calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) are high.

The given results of persistent hypercalcemia & an elevated serum parathyroid hormone level are the diagnostic criteria for primary hyperparathyroidism.

Hyperparathyroidism is a group of conditions characterized by an overproduction of PTH by the parathyroid glands. If PTH levels are high, you could have hyperparathyroidism. It is most commonly caused by a benign parathyroid tumor.

Your treating doctor has advised imaging studies (nuclear test) to detect the possibility of such a tumor and its severity.

Hope this will help.
