What Does Bilateral Renal Pelviectasis Mean?

Hello Doctor, Yesterday, I had my 29th week scan.. It is found in the ultrasound examination that foetus having bilateral renal pelviectasis with the left and right kidneys measuring 10mm and 11mm. When I was googling about it, I found that this might be a mild complication for the baby. I am very much worried about my baby s health at present. All other baby s measurement such as BPD, AC, femur length are normal as per 29th week guidelines.. My baby also weighs 1.3kgs approx now.. Is it a serious issue doctor?? Will it be alright after birth.. Please advice me on what can be done at this time??

Hi,bilateral renal pelviectasis means both kidneys are slightly enlarged.it is seen in 1 in 100 fetuses and 1 in 500 have significant cause.it can be in a normal fetus or due to certain problems of the urinary system like vesicoureteric reflux, posterior urethral valves, ectopic ueretoceles, prune belly syndrome, clocal malformation etc.an association with down s syndrome is also seen.but in your case no other markers for down s syndrome is positive so its ruled out.secondly the kidkey size is slightly enlarged which in all likelihood should be normal.but the baby will be thoroughly examined once after birth.take care and all the best
