What Does An Elevated PSA Level Indicate?

I have an elevated PSA lever of 5.6. My family doctor suggested a prostate ultrasound. The results of the ultrasound shows two nodules within the prostate. Is this a sure sign of cancer? Is the next step a biopsy? Is a urologist the doctor I should be scheduling with? Thank you for your help

General & Family Physician 's  Response

Hi & Welcome.
Incomplete data like age, purpose of doing PSA test, any symptoms, etc ??
I can understand your concern for the elevated PSA level.

PSA (prostate specific antigen) level below 4 ng/ml is normal.
So you have higher levels.
High PSA levels are seen in
1. Benign Prostatic Enlargement (BPE)
2. Prostatic cancer
3. Prostate infection.

So better to consult urologist and get clinical examination done. The possibility of cancer should be always ruled out so you need to do a biopsy if something suspected is found.

Hope the advice given above would be useful.
Best regards.
