What Does A Pulse Rate Of 100 In A Hypertensive Person Indicate?

My son was diagnosed with hypertension at the age of 15. He was placed on 10 mg of some hypertensive drug and has been taking it daily for the last 8 years (he is now 23). He has always been very active in sports (football, basketball & track) and appears to be in excellent health. He is 5 foot 6 and weights about 155. At his recent yearly physical his BP was 126/78 and he had a resting pulse rate of 96. His physician (same cardiologist for the last 8 years) continues to tell me no big deal. My son says he feels fine but as his father I am concerned because his resting pulse continues to 100. What are your thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sometimes, a fast heartbeat is a normal response to exercising or feeling excited or anxious but other things that can cause tachycardia include: having too many drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea or soda. Having thyroid condition and problems with his heart's electrical system and high blood pressure also cause tachycardia.

His doctor may probably do a test called an electrocardiogram and other blood tests. 8 year ago he got a check from his GP and Cardiologist. It was reassurance. If he is doing fine with heart rate 100 per min, don't be worried. But if he have trouble breathing or have chest pain, dizziness, fainting you can bring him to see his doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
