What Does A Painful Lump On The Tongue Indicate?

I have a pea-sized lump slightly off-center to the left on my tongue. It is very sore and is causing the whole left side of my tongue and even a little into my throat to be sore as well. It just appeared overnight and has only been there today, but it is very painful. What could it be?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

A pea sized lump on the tongue that is very painful can be most probably due to an abscess formation or can be due to tongue bite leading to hematoma formation. It can also be an inflamed and swollen tongue papillae. So my suggestion is to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a clinical examination should be done to check what exactly it is. In case if it is an abscess, then you can be advised antibiotics, like Augmentin and anti inflammatory painkillers, like Ibuprofen to relieve pain and swelling. Apply Lidocaine gel to reduce pain especially before eating. Suck ice to reduce inflammation and pain. Avoid any spicy, hard and irritant foods. Gargle with antiseptic mouthwash. Do warm saline gargles.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
