What Does A Painful Lump On The Leg Indicate?

Hi...my husband who is now 66 just noticed a lump on the ride side in the sac close to his leg. He says it's sore but doesn't want to see anyone. What should I do? I guess he's afraid it may be cancer. He did have a lump removed about 15 yrs ago on the right hand side up higher it was benign.

Hi there,

I would have your husband undergo an ultrasound. In most cases, masses that are painful are NOT associated with cancer. It sounds like a painful mass would be consistent with something more like an abscess. An ultrasound is a quick and non-invasive test that can be done as an outpatient. I would reassure him and try to encourage him to get an ultrasound.

I hope this is helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.
