What Does A Painful Lump Beside The Knee Cap Indicate?

I have a lump beside my knee cap and it moves when i touch it and it hurts alot and sometimes it disapears but then comes back in a few mins. Also when the lump is present it hurts to bend my knee but when the lump disappears i can bend my knee without pain
