What Does A Lump Behind The Thigh Indicate?

For about 2 months I have had a grape sized lump under the skin, on the back of my thigh (it feels like it is attached deep in the muscle). Looking at my leg, you cannot tell it is there, and doesn t hurt unless pushed on. Over about the last week, the lump has swollen, hurts all the time, and the area around it is now purple/red. Additionally, I have 2 swollen vericose veins right under it. I don t know if one has to do with the other? Could it be a blood clot? Do I need to rush to the emergency room? Any advice you can give will be helpful. Thanks! Dana

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

In most cases, this is just a swollen lymph node which doesn't require any specific treatment at this point. This usually happens as a reaction to any infection or inflammation in your body and pulls back within 2 weeks.

Other causes include benign subcutaneous lesions such as lipoma or atheroma and if there are no skin changes such as redness, pus discharge or pain and fever then you should not be worried and you can wait and see if this will grow. In cases of further growth, you can do an ultrasound scan or have it surgically removed under local anesthesia. Then if there are doubts it can be sent to the patho-histologic analysis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
