What Does A Dark Spot Under The Nail Indicate?

I have a dark spot under the nail at the nail bed of my left big toe. It s been there a few weeks. When it first appeared the cuticle was red and irritated. I used mupirocin and the cuticle has cleared up. But the dark spot is still there and seems to be getting a little larger each day.

Hello,

It can be micro bleeding which might have happened due to trivial trauma without your notice or something. Blood has clotted and now has formed hematoma there so there is discoloration. Before it heals it usually enlarges and take around 2-4weeks to disappear. Sometimes usually the cells become dead and will never come back to original. In that cases you better get your nail removed so that a new nail grows over it later and everything is repaired.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Archana
