What Do Sneezing Episodes In A Child Indicate?
My 11 year old son has sneezing fits whenever he walks into most public buildings. As soon as he goes out side, it stops. We have narrowed this reaction to ammonium chloride based cleaners and sanitizers. An allergist once prescribed a nasal spray that never worked and said he had never heard or seen this type of allergy. I took him to his school yesterday to test out his classrooms, as soon as he entered it began and would not stop until he went outside. Is there any info on this type of allergy anywhere. He does not have this reaction to bleach based cleaners.

I have read your worry with much concern.This type of an allergy is difficult to come by.I will say, the best treatment is to avoid contact with what provokes it.This is something very difficult since he is just a child.Adults allergic to Quaternary Ammonium compounds are always advised to change jobs if job environment cannot be modified to suit them.Your son in a child with a bright future.Any body including the school authorities if told your story must sympathize.School right now is the second most important place in that child's life after home.I will propose you meet the school authorities and plead with them on the chemicals they use in cleaning.Propose the ones you use in your home and if able, raise some funds for that.If this is accepted, we will only hope as the child grows up, his system adapts better.Also, a different and systemic anti-allergy can be tried.See the allergist again.
