What Do Recurring Episodes Of Pounding Heart Suggest?

My father has had a few episodes of sudden heart pounding over the last week. He has been doing a little yard work when it s hot plus we had changed our coffee to a rather strong one. Also he tends to be very high-strung and had a home project that caused some stress. The last episode went away after ten minutes when he made himself relax. The time before this though it last longer. Is this something that should be checked out?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the pounding heart does pause the issue of various possible causes as:
- Anxiety or agitation
- Conduction defects of SA, AV node, Purkinjee fibers, bundle of Hiss or individual cardiac chambers
- Serum electrolytes abnormalities as low potassium or sodium etc. The best initial test is an EKG for fine details of cardiac activity.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
