What Do Pregnancy Symptoms After Taking Emergency Contraceptive Pills Suggest?

My husband and I have been having unprotected sex for about a year now. My period is usually due on the 7th, and if it s ever late, it s only by a day. We have not been actively trying to conceive, but on the night of the 3rd (of this month) he came inside me. I opted to take an emergency contraceptive pill and I did so on the night of the 4th. On the 6th, I came down with what I thought to be the flu (sneezing, runny nose, throat and head aches etc) and he promptly showed the same symptoms around the 7th. My period did not come as expected on the 7th. After the flu I was left with a cough and then stated experiencing pregnancy symptoms: tender nipples, heavy breast, loss of appetite, food aversion, chills (once), tiredness, short waves of nausea, high thirst, ear popping lasting about 2 days and then occasional after, serious bloating (to the point of some discomfort laying down), mood swings (I d cry for no apparent reason). Also, at around the time my period was due, I got a slight pinkish streak when I wiped, which I later assumed to be implantation bleeding, after researching it. After seeing this and experiencing all the symptoms, we decided to take a home pregnancy test around the 11th, which came up negative :( Thing is, today is the 15th and what I assume to be my period has come, but not in the way my period usually comes. The usual starts off very light and gradually increases to a heavy flow, with almost always harsh cramping. This one was a sudden gush and very dark red in color with a fresh smell. During the course of today, it has lightened up to more of a crimson red color and little to no scent. Although we weren t actively trying, my husband and I would happily welcome a baby (we were so excited when we figured I was pregnant!) and a negative test along with this period after all these symptoms (I really still FEEL I am pregnant) really has left us disappointed and for me, quite scared. Am I pregnant? Is something wrong with me? CAN I be pregnant, with all these things happening? Please help!

Hi,

Emergency contraceptive has following effects after consumption:
- If taken within 72 hours of sex (earlier the better) it postpones ovulation and prevents conception due to the particular sex
- It shows small amount of bleeding about 8-10 days following intake as a withdrawal bleeding of the hormones in pill (the one you thought to be implantation bleeding)
- Having high hormone content...it has side effects simulating pregnancy
- The date of normal periods is also postponed between 10-15 days because of interruption in hormonal menstrual cycle

I hope now many things are clear. As you had sex just few days before expected menses date..there was no chance of ovulation that time (provided the periods are normal/regular). Also, you had taken an emergency pill so you are sure to to conceive with that sex. Even if you had, you needed to get it removed to avoid bad effects of the pills on fetus.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
