What Do Pain And Swelling At The Base Of The Thumb Indicate?

Hi. Even after an EMT (?) I m not convinced I have carpal tunnel syndrome. Was told in both hands. I do not have the typical symptoms. Only symptom is continuous pain and swelling at base of thumb (palm) since Dec 2014. I know exactly how it happened. Banging packing boxes into shape...repeatedly It was a BIG move. Really don t want surgery. Any idea how to be sure it s necessary? Please and Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello! Welcome to HCM!

Question is, how old are you and do you suffer from arthritis or not? Do you suffer from pain in night time or pain radiating to index finger and thumb? If your pain becomes worse in night time or if it moves towards thumb and index and middle fingers it could be CTS. But there are few clinical tests that need to be taken before one can make a final diagnosis. Else you can buy Futura splint from pharmacy and try to wear it for a week. Wait to see if it relieves you from symptoms.

Take care

Regards,
