General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pharyngitis is the infection and inflammation of the pharyngeal wall which is at the back of the oral cavity. Usually the common cause is virus but bacteria may be involved in pharyngitis. Management of the infection depends on the cause. Management is divided into symptomatic and selective. Sore throat and cough should be treated with soothing agents and cough suppressants. Common virus infection does not need immediate antiviral therapy.

Salt water gargling in warm water helps to soothe the throat. Analgesics helps to overcome pain due to pharyngitis. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infection. Soft diet is advised. One more thing to be mentioned is the pharyngitis due to acid reflux. It should be corrected with proton pump inhibitors or H2 receptor blockers. Visit the doctor for further evaluation and management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
