What Do Dark Patches On The Back Indicate?

I m a 60 yr. old Caucasian female, olive-toned skin color. About 10-15 yrs. ago I started developing dark patches on my back...the skin is just as smooth as the rest of my skin but, over time, the patches have increased in size and multiplied (I now have 4-5). I feel numbness and tingling in these areas as well as itching (almost constantly). The largest patch (about 5-6 across and somewhat round in shape) has a small, perfectly round (about the size of a ball-pin head) brilliant white spot, which has been there for 5+ yrs. I asked my GP what they could be and, after examining, he concluded they were just change in pigmentation - I only had 2 then. It s the itching that is so bad, I ve tried lotions, creams (incl. medicated & cortisone) but nothing seems to help. When I ve shown them to my husband (when married) or mother, they said it appears as bruises, but to look closer the color is dark brown to black. I can t seem to find anything that matches my symptoms. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The basic issue with dark patches indicates possible immune reaction of body T lymphocytes via some sort of HLA mismatch or else.

A detailed work up clinically with necessary blood tests and skin biopsy as per the consultant choice would be of the best way to diagnose.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
