What Could Have Caused Random Chest Pains?

I ve been having random chest pains. It is localized in the left side of the chest. It feels like needles, it worsens if I try to breathe. It does not last long. The last time I had chest pains it lasted about 3 minutes. I went to see my Dr. about it a few years ago. She performed an EKG and said everything was fine. She said I was stressed out. Should I take these pains seriously and visit my Dr. again? What could be the cause? Thank you.

Hi,

Noted your history about momentary chest pain on the left side like needles, EKG being normal the Doctor said everything is fine.
Since your stress level is high the cause of pain can be anything of the following which can be diagnosed by ruling out or confirming the source of pain:
Costochondritis: There will be local pain and the pain increases on local pressure. The pain comes and goes, increases with anxiety, stress, viral infection and so on.
Fibromyalgia same as above but the source is the muscles.
Pain from lung and pleura will be continuous. X-ray of chest will help.
Heart pain can be ruled out by EKG which may need review, stress tests, echocardiography and an opinion of a Cardiologist.
In all such cases it is very important that your get an appropriate clinical actual examination and correlation to the investigations.
Once the cause is known the treatment will be guided and effective.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
