What Could Extreme Fluctuation In BP While Having Hypothyroidism Indicate?

Have uncontrolable blood pressure. Can go up to as high as 180/120 for up to 3 days and then bottom out as low as 87/40. I am a heart patient and have had numerous test run including a CT scan of my head. No results. Have had a rolling heart moniter put in my chest and it alway checks OK. Have dizzy spells dailey and have passed completely out on occasion. Under a cardiologist s care and he has forbidden me to even drive a car. When BP is low all I want to do is sleep and then when it is high I feel terrible. I also have Hypo~Thyroid isum . The one where the Thyroid has slowed down. Test results say my rating is a 12. Am on medication for it. Am a recovering smoker. Social drinker.

Hi,

Stress would definitely play a part in your blood pressure levels. There is a slight reduction after you had rest but it is still a lot higher than recommended. In persons 60 years or less, the goal is less than 140/90. In persons 60 yrs and older the goal is less than 150/90. Though your BP is above the goal, it is not at a level to cause immediate danger.

You should take your am medications and recheck your BP after 2 to 3 hours to see if there is further improvement. Avoid any caffeine, rest if this is possible. If on recheck, it is continuing to decrease then you can continue to take your medications as prescribed. If the blood pressure is in the same range, then you may need to contact your doctor. He or she may want to recheck in the office to confirm the readings.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
