What Could Be Wrong If Child Is Gasping For Breath When Upset And Crying?

my four year old son just recently started losing his breath if he is really upset and beginning to cry.I had to hit his back to get him to catch his breath. He seems to try to gasp for air and it upsets him because he will grab his mouth with his hands. What could be going on?

Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

These are typical breath holding spells which usually occurs when the children excessively cry. There is no cause for concern if there is no bluish discolouration of the lips during the breath holding spell.
No cause for concern and unnecessary worry. But would also suggest you to consult your Pediatrician which will be still mote reassuring. Good clinical examination will avoid missing anything.

Take care
