What Could Be The Reason For Having Hard Lump On Finger Which Is Increasing In Size?

Hi, Several months ago, my husband showed me a hard lump on the side of his ring finger right on the first joint. It felt almost like a bone and appeared as if it had a little point. Tonight he showed me again and it has become larger with a point in the center. it is under the skin and hard. What can this be and what type of doctor should he see?
