My dad had an ejection fraction of 25 percent and his legs and stomack were retaining water then in 4 months his ejection fraction became less than 16 percent he went into the hospital to put a battery for his heart but while in the cardiac icu he started sleeping all the time and they told us his liver and kidneys were failing then when he started to get better because of the meds he still was sleepy and then they said he had a stroke in his brain stem and could only open his eyes and could nit breath on his own so after less than a week in the hospital to get a battery he died.could something else have been done.could he have lived.was there a mistake

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nizar Ali's Response
Hello Sorry to hear your father's death.May his soul rest in peace.. I would say there is no mistake in his management...ejection fraction is the amoi t of blood the heart pump in each beat ,normally it's above 55% and if falling down meaning g that the heart is not working properly and unable to pump the blood to the tissue. The vulnerable organs which are effected due to lack of supply are kidneys,Brain, eyes and yes the Heart itself. According to you he had an ejection fraction of 16 on admission to hospital then he was not in good condition.... Heart transplantation is choice for the failing heart when ejection fraction is less than 25% but the patient should be stable... But in your case your dear father was not in good shape...
Hope you'd understand. Sorry for your great loss.
Thanks
