What Could Be The Cause For Severe Constipation?

My bowel movement size has changed over the past 8 months from regular size to small round ball like shape and the to even smaller size round size with tiny pieces. Also I have to lean back on the toilet to help push these out. I usually have two movement a day, about 15 to 20 of small size. Sometimes I skip a day, same as from childhood to Adulthood. The color is brown and I never had any pain. Have had colonoscopies during past 12 yrs and only had 1-2 polyps removed that were benign. Why this difference in size? Should I see my protolegist soon or wait until my next test due in Feb 2019? Is this change a sign of cancer of the colon? Would appreciate an answer!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

This may be related to IBS and chronic constipation (spasms). That is particularly true when you consume foods like nuts or popcorn that would trigger spasms of the bowel.

I suggest running colonoscopy to exclude organic problems first. With regards to finding blood floating in the toilet after you pass the motion, that would be related to possible:
- fissures due to chronic constipation
- hemorrhoids

In both cases, you need to take measures to reduce constipation that would trigger such problems:
- do more physical activity
- increase water consumption
- take more foods high in fiber content
- fiber supplements can help
- can use laxatives once in a while to improve the symptoms

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
