What Causes Yellowish Pus Discharge From Gums After Removal Of Root For Tooth Abcess?

A couple of weeks ago, I had an abcess, swollen check, gum pain. I was given an antibiotic (clintomycin)and pain killer from urgent care center. The next day, I went to the dentist. They took an x-ray and told me that I have a tooth root under my gum that has to be removed. They referred me to a dental surgeon. The dental surgeon removed the root and prescribed zythromycin and a pain killer. This was two weeks ago. Now, although the swelling and pain is gone, I am having green and yellow pus coming from my gum beneath where the tooth root was pulled. I see it when I gently press on my gum. I am allergic to Penicillin and have read that the best antibiotic for patients allergic to penicillin is erthromycin. I believe there is some slight drainage as well, because I have a bad taste in my mouth. Do you think that I may need to have this drained or will another antibiotic take care of it?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern...

As per your complain if after two weeks of extraction also you have pus discharge from the gum area from where the tooth root was extracted it is a clear indication of infection in that area..

The infection can be due to either the reason that still there is some portion
of root piece left out in the socket and is not completely removed.
Other reason is that there is some foreign body inclusion in the socket.
Many a times if there is some infected granulation tissue in the socket and if the socket is not curetted properly after extraction as well as if you are not advised antibiotics after extraction there can be infection and pus formation..
Nothing to worry, consult your dentist and get another x-ray done so that the exact cause of the infection can be ruled out and treatment can be done accordingly..
If there is left over root piece or foreign body ,removal of the same followed by antibiotics and painkillers can help..
In case if nothing is evident in the socket, curretting the socket to remove any granulation tissue followed by antibiotics and painkillers will help..

Hope this information helps..
