What Causes Yellow Eyes In A Mentally Challenged Child?
my son has very yellow eyes;where the white of the eyes are . he has for many a years had a mentall illnesss I am wondering what the cause might be. All the medications he has taken for his mental illness makes him worse. H e was once told by a doctor he had a fatt liver
The yellow eyes are a sign that you have elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood called jaundice. Jaundice is a sign of many possible liver problems that can cause it to function incorrectly. So, I think you should do your child some lab examination (AST, ALT, ALP, Bilirubin, Ggt, HBsAg, Anti HCV) and physical examination by a doctor to find the causes of this sign.
According to your concern it is known that some medications for the mental illness affect the liver but you should exclude in the same time and other pathology that have this sign (specially Gilbert syndrome, viral hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis).
I hope my answer help you. I will be happy to help if you have further questions. I wish your son a quick recovery.
Regards, Dr. Monika Dede
