What Causes Weight Loss And Loss Of Appetite?

My son age 31 is experiencing significant weight loss and has no appetite. He is 6 3 and weighed 220 with a waist size of 34-36. He now is at a 30-32 waist and I am guessing he has lost 70-75 pounds in the last six months. The last ten or fifteen have happened in the last six weeks. He works 40 plus hours a week in a restaurant and walks to work and back ( Or takes a transit). He has been taking Abilify fro schizo-affective disorder and one side effect has been terrible heartburn. He had medicine he took to counteract that ( similar to prilosec.) he has no appetite.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Hearburn is indicative of acid reflux, indigestion, liver dysfunction or GERD. Weight loss may be due to overactive thyroid, burning too much energy or calotie may cause weight loss.

Sometimes, weight loss can be due to certain long term illness like diabetes, cancer, AIDS, HIV, etc. Since your son is working for long hours, he needs a break. Rest & relaxation will help him recover faster. However, he is suggested to get clinically examined by a GP. Get all blood, Urinalysis & required imaging tests done.

He should take plenty of water & be well fed. Should avoid or cut on addictions if any. To improve loss of appetite he should take liver tonics & digestives. Take boiled food, avoid spicy, oily junk food. Avoid eating raw food & vegggies. Cut on addictions if any. Your treatment will depend on the clinical condition & pathology detected.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
