What Causes Weakness Along With Chest Pain And Bloodshot Eyes?

My dad went to the ER tonight ... in July he went to the hospital for a hernia surgery. His first surg required a 2nd surgery to put in better mesh and two drains. A pneumonia resulted and he had a realatively uneventful recovery in nursing home and now home for three weeks. He got another pneumonia a week and a half ago...home health gave antibiotics mom doesn t think it s gone. Had chest xray tonight no pneumonia. He is very very weak, chest pain, and super bloodshot eyes. Hx of lymphoma cured and now luekemia which he gets Gleevic for...preventative CA drug and lupus too (only after the first cancer). I asked if maybe it was the Gleevic he started taking again just a week ago. I don t think he is well enough to take it. Mom is just searching for what could be wrong. They are doing an EKG and bloodwork now. Probably just have to wait I know it could be a number of things. I was going to do symptom checker and live chat came up. My cousin was a dr and died four years ago in a plane crash.....you are the next best consult :(. Blood clot on the lungs would show on chest xray right?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Gleevec has the tendency to cause weakness and tiredness. You need to meet your doctor, either medical oncologist or hematologist, and get him checked and if required any dose reduction to be done. Chest X-ray may show some signs of blood clots but it is not the best investigation. You need a CT scan of the thorax also.

Thanks.
