What Causes Violent Behaviour While Suffering From Dementia?

My son [54] has been diagnosed with early onset dementia but still needs to see a neurologist for confirmation. He has been living with my husband and me for 4 to 6 wks and has had two violent outbursts, this last one was directed at me. He poked me in the chest while screaming hateful things. While discussing this with my daughter, we remembered that his fathers mother was bipolar. Could this be his problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health concern

Aggressiveness and violent outburst can be due to psychotic symptoms associated with dementia. Your son requires detailed evaluation and brain imaging studies like MRI to identify the cause and type of dementia.
Please be advised to follow up with neurologist. Antipsychotic medications can be used to control the violent outbursts.

Regards
Dr.Lekshmi
